How to find out whether ChatGPT names your business when a customer asks for what you sell, and what to do if it doesn't.
Updated 29 Oct 2026
The short answer
Ask it the way a customer would. Don't type your business name. Type the question a buyer asks, such as "best bakery for wedding cakes in Leeds", and see who it names.
How to check it yourself
1. Write three questions a customer asks before they've heard of you.
2. Ask each one in ChatGPT in a fresh chat, without naming yourself.
3. Note who it names and which websites it cites.
4. Repeat on another day. Answers change from run to run, so one answer is a snapshot.
What our free check does
Our free check reads your homepage, writes one buyer question from it and, after you email yourself the result, asks ChatGPT. It shows whether ChatGPT named you, who it named instead and which sources it cited, with the date. If the check can't run, the result says "Not checked".
If ChatGPT doesn't name you
- Say plainly on your homepage what you do, for whom and where.
- Get listed on the sites the answer cited.
- See [how to get mentioned by AI](/answers/how-to-get-mentioned-by-ai).
Check your own site
Run the free check on your homepage. It takes about a minute and needs no card. After you email yourself the result, we ask ChatGPT one buyer question and show whether it names you.
