AI video avatars for work: Synthesia vs AI Studios vs HeyGen (and when not to bother)
Synthesia, AI Studios and HeyGen compared for training, sales and support videos, plus the three situations where an AI avatar makes things worse.
Updated 10/23/2026
Somebody in your company just said "we could make that training video with an AI avatar." Before you nod, here's what these tools actually do, which one fits which job, and when a 30-second phone video beats all three.
What an AI video avatar is (in one breath)
You give the tool a script, a slide deck or a document. A digital presenter reads it out, lip-synced, in the language you pick. No camera, no studio, no "can we do one more take."
The three, side by side
Synthesia: built for training and internal comms. Makes videos with AI avatars and voiceovers from prompts, links or files, in 140+ languages. You can create a personal avatar from a single photo, and it turns PowerPoint decks into editable narrated videos. It supports calls to action, branching scenarios and quizzes, and its Live Sessions offer avatar-based roleplay practice for workplace conversations. There's an API for developers. Aimed at HR, marketing, sales and developers. (Our page · synthesia.io)
AI Studios (by DeepBrain AI): built for courses and customer-facing avatars. Creates videos from scripts, images or short clips, with avatars, voiceovers, dubbing and translation, plus an editor. Ready-made avatars, or custom ones from photos and video recordings. Its interactive avatars can answer questions and guide purchases using your uploaded company documents. The course builder does quizzes, branching scenarios and SCORM export for your learning management system. Aimed at marketing, sales, support and HR. (Our page · aistudios.com)
HeyGen: built for marketing and social video. Its Avatar V learns how you talk, gesture and move, then generates videos of your avatar, with multiple camera angles and lip-sync in 175+ languages and dialects. Video Agent turns an idea into a finished video with presenter footage, motion graphics, overlays and B-roll, which you can tweak afterwards. Aimed at marketers and people making social content or online courses. Says you can get started for free. (Our page)
Quick pick
| If you need… | Start with |
|---|---|

| An avatar that answers customer questions from your docs | AI Studios (interactive avatars) |
| Practising hard conversations (feedback, sales objections) | Synthesia (Live Sessions roleplay) |
| Social clips that look like *you* | HeyGen (Avatar V, Video Agent) |
| The same video in lots of languages | Any of the three; compare output on your own script |
Prices: none of the three publish a comparable price on the pages we checked, so test with your real script before anyone signs anything.
When not to bother
AI avatars are great at boring-but-necessary video. They are bad at trust. Skip them when:
1. The message is personal. Layoffs, restructures, bad news, a thank-you to the team. An avatar delivering it reads as "leadership couldn't be bothered." Film it on your phone. 2. Nobody agreed to be cloned. A custom avatar of a real person needs that person's clear OK, and a check with your company's policy on likeness and AI content. Don't make one of a colleague "as a surprise." 3. The script is the real problem. A dull 12-minute policy walkthrough is still dull with a perfect avatar. Fix the script (shorter, one point per video) first.
And label it. Viewers deserve to know a presenter is AI-generated, and finding out later feels worse than being told up front.
Is it worth it? Measure it
Pick one video you'd normally record. Time the old way, then time the avatar version, and count script rewrites, regenerations and review. Our guide to measuring an AI pilot shows how, so you're comparing like with like.
The bigger question
If an avatar can present your training, what else in your job is "explain the same thing again"? The free AI vs My Job check breaks your role into tasks and shows where AI may help and where you stay firmly human. It's not a job-loss prediction. It's a plan.
